Starting university is kind of a big deal. On top of actually studying towards your degree, you’ve got to deal with the fact that you’re surrounded by new people, you’re living in a new home, and for some, in a city you’ve never been to before. Sounds pretty scary, right? Well, fear not…
Nottingham is a lovely city to study and live in – you’ll love being a student in this wonderful city. Located in central England, in the Midlands region, Nottingham is home to two major universities – the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, and over 60,000 students – so you won’t be alone.
But while you settle in and familiarise yourself with your new surroundings, we’ve got a quick guide to some of the city’s hot spots…
If there’s one thing we can be sure about, it’s that you won’t be short of a thing or two to do in the evenings when you’re in Nottingham. In fact, the nightlife in Nottingham is so good, the city has been awarded a Purple Flag Award.
Dance the night away at one of the UK’s best live music venues Rock City, have a laugh a minute at the Glee Club, or eat until your heart’s content at one of the city’s many fine restaurants, cosy pubs or fast food outlets. And when you’re done, discover chic bars and hotspots to enjoy a cocktail or two in and dance the night away.
If you like sport, you’ve come to the right place. From football to Ice Hockey and everything in between, you’ll find a whole host of sports venues and activities in Nottingham.
Whether you’re watching a match or taking part in a game yourself, get close to the action in Nottingham. Cheer on Nottingham Forest at The City Ground football stadium, support the boys of Nottingham Rugby at The Bay, watch the Nottingham Panthers battle it out on the ice rink at The National Ice Centre and for those who follow cricket, head to Trent Bridge Cricket Club.
Did someone say shopping? If you’re in need of some retail therapy, you can shop ‘till you drop in Nottingham. Ranked as one of the UK’s top retail destinations, you’ll find everything from high street names and designer brands, to independent shops and vintage market stalls.
Shop in the centres at Broadmarsh and the Victoria Centre, head to Hockley for a browse, enjoy a leisurely stroll into the Lace Market, admire the old arcades (The Exchange and Flying Horse Walk) or grab a bargain at Sneinton Market. No matter your taste or style, you’re sure to find a shop to suit.
With a handy tram system that stops at both of the city’s universities and offers student discounts, getting around the city is quick, easy and great value for money. But if the tram isn’t for you, there are also regular bus services running around the city and to university campuses too.
Travelling further afield? Nottingham train station and Nottingham coach station have regular train and coach services connecting you to all major cities and locations across the country. And if you’re travelling abroad, East Midlands Airport and Birmingham Airport are situated close by.
