6 ways to show kindness every day.


Kindness is a choice and the more we choose to respond with kindness the more natural it will become. We must remember that It isn’t always apparent on the outside what struggles others may be facing are on the inside.

The good thing about kindness is that it’s contagious… it all starts with one act – one smile, one coffee for a person in need, one favour for a friend.

Here are a few simple ways to show kindness:

1 – Have a judgement free day.

Make today a day free of judgement in your words, thoughts and actions. Don’t let your fears or insecurities get in the way of truly getting to know someone.

2 – Encourage a classmate.

Who doesn’t love a little cheering on? Sometimes a few words of encouragement really go a long way if someone is feeling uncertain or unmotivated.

3 – Make a donation.

Even the smallest amounts can help.  Whether this is donating a food tin to the collection box at the check-out in the supermarket or sparing a few pennies to local charities.

We know that being a student means that sometimes funds can be tight, why not donate your time instead? Volunteer a few hours at a local charity shop, not only does this do wonders for the soul and the community it looks great on your C.V.

4 – Smile more.

“If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours” Smiling not only shows people that you are happy it is proven to make you feel happier and those around you.

5 – Strike up a conversation with a stranger.

For most people, striking up a conversation with strangers can be intimidating. However, doing so can lead to rewarding conversations and maybe brighten someone’s day that you took the time out to say hello. Why not strike up a conversation up someone in the library or the canteen and ask them what they are reading or what’s on the menu today?

6 – Give up your seat.

We all dash to get that last seat on the bus or the tram and feel some satisfaction that we don’t need to stand up hanging on for dear life to our stop. However, next time you are on a crowded tram or bus, why not give up your seat to the struggling mother or elderly person? Your kindness will not go unnoticed.

You may have spent the past few weeks with family and friends, indulging in delicious food and drink, and enjoying long lie ins. But now it’s back to university, and back to the reality of revision, exams and a busy semester – it’s enough to make anyone feel a little blue.

But it doesn’t have to be all bad. It’s the start of a new year, which should be seen as a positive thing. You’ve got a whole year ahead of you to embrace opportunities, work hard and achieve your goals – whilst having fun and making wonderful memories along the way. Below are a few tips to help keep you positive and upbeat during the post-Christmas period…

1. Catch up with your friends

Saying goodbye to your family and friends from home can be tough after the holidays, but don’t forget as you head back to your accommodation, your uni friends will be doing the same too so you won’t be alone. As it’s probably been a few weeks since you’ve all seen each other, why not arrange to get together and catch up on all the gossip before term starts?

2. Have a detox

For most people, Christmas is an indulgent time of year with most diets going out the window. And after a few weeks of over eating and drinking, you may be feeling lethargic and bloated – which certainly won’t do your mood any favours. So, ditch the carbs and junk food and give your body a healthy detox. Opt for fresh, colourful and wholesome foods that are packed with vitamins and nutrients to keep you energised. You could even try drinking no alcohol and taking part in Dry January.

3. Focus on your studies

Keeping yourself busy at university and working hard will not only distract you from the January blues and the winter lull, but it will do wonders for your grades. With the first semester already under your belt and only a few months until the end of the year, now is the time to really knuckle down, attend all of your lectures and really focus on being fully prepared for upcoming exams, assignments and dissertations.

4. Look ahead to summer

The shortest day has already passed (21st December), which means things are already looking brighter – quite literally! The evenings will start to gradually get lighter and before we know it summer will be upon us. So, why not start planning how you’ll spend your summer? Whether it’s a holiday abroad, various shorter breaks in the UK, camping or festivals, having something planned will give you something to look forward to and work towards.

Hopefully keeping yourself occupied with something to focus on will lift your spirits and before you know it the long month of January will have passed. But if you are still feeling blue, be sure to talk to someone – whether it be a friend, flatmate, family member or someone at university or here at Host and let them know how you’re feeling.

7 ways to improve your health and wellbeing at university

So, to ensure you make the most of your time as a student, there are some simple things you can do to help improve your health and wellbeing whilst at university…

1. Sleep


Pulling the odd all-nighter and having a late night out with your friends every now and then is fine, but not getting enough sleep affects chemicals in the brain which can make us feel low and anxious. So, make sure you get as many good night’s sleep as possible to feel refreshed and recharged – you’ll wake up with a more positive attitude ready to take on the day ahead.

2. Get active


Regular activity and exercise is not only good for your waistline and physical health, but also for your mental health and wellbeing. When you exercise you’ll see an immediate boost in your overall mood because your body releases chemicals called endorphins and these endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body. And you don’t need to run marathons to be active, even a brisk walk around the local park will help!

3. Do something for someone else


Whether it’s volunteering in the community, raising money for a good cause or a simple random act of kindness such as helping an elderly person with their shopping bags or giving up your seat on a train for a pregnant person, helping others can make us feel good and improve our self-esteem, whilst reducing stress and negative feelings.

4. Stay social


Long periods of being alone and isolated aren’t healthy, so interact with people regularly and grow your friendship network. Chat with others on your course, introduce yourself to fellow residents at your accommodation, join clubs and societies, get involved with any events at your university/college, accommodation or student’s union, volunteer in the community and embrace any work opportunities.

5. Have fun


University isn’t just about studying and deadlines. It’s important to have fun, laugh as much as possible and enjoy yourself. Whether it’s playing a team sport, watching the latest movie at the cinema, catching up with friends over dinner or getting lost in a novel, be sure to make time for doing the things that make you happy.

6. Eat well


Reaching for the convenience foods and sugary snacks might be an easy option as a student but they’re not the healthiest. These sugary foods are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream which may cause an initial ‘high’ or surge of energy, but it will soon wear off as the body increases its insulin production, leaving you feeling tired and low. However, a balanced mood and feelings of wellbeing can be protected by eating a well-balanced diet containing adequate amounts of complex carbohydrates, essential fats, amino acids, vitamins and minerals and water.

7. Drink well


Similar to your diet, you should maintain a health intake of fluids. Avoid drinks high in caffeine, or at least drink them in moderation, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, particularly if you are drinking alcohol. If you don’t drink enough water, you’ll become dehydrated which can cause headaches and make you feel tired and dizzy.

Following these simple tips will help to improve your health and wellbeing whilst at university. However, if you do experience any problems throughout your studies, no matter how big or small they may be, you should always speak to someone and seek advice. Whether it’s a friend, a family member, a doctor, a support group, your university’s welfare department or a member of the Host team, they will be able to offer support, help and guidance.
