Love it or loathe it, the 14th February – or Valentine’s Day as it’s also known, is coming. Every year the prospect of Valentine’s Day is simultaneously met with excitement and horror.

If your bank account will barely stretch to another packet of M&Ms, let alone the Michelin star restaurant and bed of rose petals your other half has their eye on, then fear not, there are many fun ways that you can spoil your loved one without breaking the bank. To help you out, we’ve pulled together a few of our favourite ideas to help get you started:

1. Eat out for less

You don’t have to spend a fortune to go out with your date; more often than not, restaurants have set menus and special offers running on these special occasions. Whether it’s 3 courses at a discounted price or a free glass of bubbly with your meal, you’re sure to find something to suit your budget. Visit your favourite restaurant’s website or give them a call for more information or visit Go Dine for some of Nottingham’s top deals.

2. Dine in

If you want to avoid doe eyed diners, why not treat your loved one to a home cooked meal? Cook up your favourite dish from scratch, have some fun cooking some heart-shaped pizzas together or buy a pre-made meal from the supermarket so you spend more time with your date, and less time in the kitchen! At Tesco you can buy one of their Finest meal deals for two which includes a starter, main dish, side dish, dessert and a bottle of wine for just £20.

3. Valentine’s scrapbook

Sometimes it’s hard to find the perfect card with just the right verse. So, why not add that personal touch and create your own? You could even make your own Valentine’s scrapbook and show your recipient just how much they mean to you. Shops such as Hobbycraft and Paperchase make it easy to get your hands on arts and craft materials, and they won’t break the bank either. If you’re more techy, you can upload photos and get a card or book printed online from sites such as Moonpig, Funky Pigeon or Snapfish.

4. The Lost City Adventure Golf

If you’re looking for something a bit more entertaining this year, then head to The Lost City and celebrate with a difference. Whether it’s a date night or a mate night, enjoy a game of adventure golf before heading to the Tiki Bar for a limited-edition cocktail – all for just £13.50 (or 18.50 for two games).

5. Celebrate early

Break the mould and celebrate a romantic evening with your loved one early! Not sure what to do? Why not take an orbital journey across the city of Nottingham to discover stunning light installations and exciting performances?  This year’s Light Night will take place on Friday 8th February from 6pm onwards. In Old Market Square, you can take a selfie in front of the massive 25m-wide installation or enjoy the Light Market attractions with a hand-picked selection of some of Nottingham’s best street food and independent traders.

6. Gift basket

Show the person you love how well you know them by filling a small basket with some of their favourite things.  This doesn’t need to be expensive, you could fill it with bubble bath, chocolates, a small bottle of their favourite drink or their favourite snacks.
