We know that you’re heading to University ready to get stuck in to some serious studying BUT, every once in a while you need to blow off some steam and have fun with your new friends. Student life should be a balance between hard work and enjoying yourself, and as there is so much to do on the doorstep of The Lace Market Studios, you won’t have to go too far to find something to fill your free time!

So, as many of you will be new to Nottingham (in fact many of our Lace Market Studios international students will be new to the UK) we thought that we’d share with you our top 4 things to do in Nottingham’s famous Lace Market.

  1. The Lace Market area itself is a protected heritage site and well worth a wander. While never a market in the strictest sense, it was the epicentre of the world’s lace industry during the British Empire. The area is full of impressive 19th Century architecture, and you can still see many of the lace warehouses and salesrooms – no trip to the Lace Market would be complete however without a couple of stops in one or two of the independent bars and coffee shops.  You know, just to get a real feel for the place.
  2. If you fancy catching a show the Lace Market Theatre is a great little independent playhouse offering a varied programme of modern and traditional drama, comedy and the occasional musical thrown in for good measure. And, as it’s an amateur theatre, open auditions are held throughout the year so, if your study schedule allows, why not get involved too?
  3. Nottingham is undoubtedly a city of culture and the Nottingham Contemporary Gallery embodies this. Set over three levels you can lose a day wandering around taking in some of the very best in contemporary, modern art on offer. And as the Gallery has a ‘strong sense of local purpose’ you can expect to see some local artists, which is always exciting.
  4. If you’ve had enough history and culture, literally across the road from The Lace Market Studios (in fact you might well be able to see it from your window) is the Capital FM Arena. Throughout the year this large indoor venue plays host to big name music stars, popular shows and comedians. But that’s not all, you’ll also find the National Ice Centre here too, so if you’re a budding figure skater or fancy a game of Ice Hockey, you have one of the best Ice Rinks in the UK at your disposal.

As The Lace Market Studios are located in the hippest part of the city, we’ve just scratched the surface of cool things to do. Hopefully, we’ve given you a taster of what is on offer, but there is no comparison to getting out and about and exploring this exciting city for yourself…

So go on then, what are you waiting for?
